Mitsubishi Materials Corporation
Mitsubishi Materials Corporation("MMC") has been selected by CDP, an international environmental information disclosure NGO, for the second consecutive year as an "A List" company with the highest rating in the climate change field, in recognition of its efforts to address climate change.
CDP, established in the United Kingdom in 2000, is an international environmental non-governmental organization that operates a global environmental information disclosure system for companies and local governments. The organization annually evaluates the efforts and information disclosure of major companies around the world in the three fields of "climate change," "water security," and "forests," and selects the best companies as "A List" companies.
MMC has identified "strengthening measures to address global environmental issues" as one of its material issues, and is strengthening its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality.
We have also clearly positioned "advance decarbonization" as a key element of our environmental policy.
Furthermore, in the Medium-term Management Strategy (FYE March 2027-2029) announced in November 2025, the basic policy is to become a company committed to "creating the future through resource circulation," and we are accelerating business expansion toward the realization of a recycling-oriented society.
Specifically, we are planning to double the amount of E-Scrap processed, build new secondary raw material smelting plants in Europe and the United States, establish a system to recycle 100% of tungsten, and expand the use of renewable energy. These efforts are linked to MMC's carbon neutrality target for the fiscal year ending March 2046 and its emission reduction targets under Scope 1 (GHG emissions excluding resource circulation initiatives) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions associated with supplied-energy usage), and are directly linked to the realization of a decarbonized society.
MMC has set the fiscal year ending March 2046 as the target year for achieving carbon neutrality, which is five years ahead of Japan's national target of the fiscal year ending March 2051. As part of further detailing our roadmap toward achieving carbon neutrality by the fiscal year ending March 2046, and taking into account Japan's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)*1 set by the Japanese government in February 2025, we have established GHG emission reduction targets for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions for the fiscal year ending March 2036 and 2041. These new targets are a 65% reduction by the fiscal year ending March 2036 and an 82% reduction by the fiscal year ending March 2041 (both compared to the fiscal year ended March 2021 levels). These figures were calculated based on the slope of a straight line connecting our previously announced fiscal year ending March 2031 and fiscal year ending March 2046 targets. Additionally, by the fiscal year ending March 2051 we aim to achieve renewable energy generation comparable to the power we consume internally, resulting in an effective 100% self-sufficiency rate for renewable energy. In these ways, we will continue to pursue business activities aimed at realizing a decarbonized society.
As specific initiatives to reduce GHG emissions, we are reducing fossil fuel use by introducing energy-saving equipment and improving efficiency at manufacturing sites. Moreover, we have calculated the carbon footprint for electrolytic copper and refined lead, and are promoting the use of renewable electricity. In addition, we are working to create a variety of renewable energy sources, including geothermal power, which is our Group's strength, as well as solar power and hydroelectric power.
Furthermore, we manage our company-owned forests for the purpose of harnessing their ecosystem services at a high level. Those services include not only the production of lumber but also the provision of public recreational spaces, the prevention of global warming through CO2 fixation, and the conservation of biodiversity. To realize a decarbonized society, it is important not only to reduce GHG emissions from our company operations but also to reduce GHG emissions throughout our entire supply chain, and we are working with our suppliers to raise our environmental awareness.
We regularly disclose these activities in Integrated Reports, Sustainability Reports, etc.
MMC Group has set out "For people, society and the earth, circulating resources for a sustainable future" as Our Commitment, and we will continue to develop various activities to realize a decarbonized society.
