Carbon Footprint Calculation for Refined Lead Awarded Third-Party Verification

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation calculated the Carbon Footprint of Products ("CFP" (*1)) for refined lead produced by our Group company, Hosokura Metal Mining Co., Ltd. ("Hosokura Metal Mining"), and confirmed that the results comply with international standards through a critical review conducted by a third-party organization (*2).

In this CFP calculation, we assessed the greenhouse gas emissions per ton of refined lead produced in the fiscal year ended March 2024, using a cradle-to-gate approach (from raw material procurement to product manufacturing and shipment) in accordance with international standards for Life Cycle Assessment ("LCA") and CFP (*3). As a result of a critical review conducted by Japan Life Cycle Assessment Facilitation Centre (President: Dr. Atsushi Inaba), the calculation process was determined to be compliant with the relevant standards.

Hosokura Metal Mining produces refined lead by collecting and recycling used lead batteries from automobiles and other vehicles. This refined lead is one of our recycled metal products under the unique brand "REMINE." The recycled content has been verified by a third-party. Additionally, the greenhouse gas emissions throughout the life cycle have been objectively and reliably verified by a third-party.

This effort of CFP calculation follows the receipt of the Chairman's Award for LCA efforts in "electrolytic copper" at the 21st LCA Society of Japan Awards held in January 2025. We will continue to conduct CFP calculations for other major products and promote initiatives related to climate change.

Since CFP requires calculation and analysis of GHG emissions at each stage of the life cycle of individual products, this indicator enables the identification of GHG emission reduction measures that should be prioritized or focused not only on the company's business activities but also on the supply chain as a whole from a comprehensive perspective.
(*2)
A process in which an LCA expert checks whether the implemented LCA meets the requirements of (*3).
