Mitsubishi Materials Corporation

Construction of a CFP Digital Platform in the Copper and Copper Alloy Products Business and Acquisition of Third-Party Certification for the CFP Calculation System

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation ("MMC") has built a data platform called the "CFP Digital Platform" to visualize the carbon footprint of products, or CFP (*1), for its main products in the copper and copper alloy products business and has acquired certification from a third-party organization for the CFP calculation and verification system centered on this platform. This marks the first instance in Japan in the copper and copper alloy products in which a CFP calculation system has received third-party certification (*2).

In its Medium-term Management Strategy, MMC has positioned addressing climate change as a key management issue and aims to achieve carbon neutrality through greenhouse gas reductions across its entire value chain. In recent years, against the backdrop of the transition to a decarbonized society, there has been growing demand for understanding and disclosing greenhouse gas emissions at the product level. In particular, for our major customers in the automotive and electrical/electronic sectors, providing reliable CFP information is becoming an important factor in business competitiveness, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact throughout the entire supply chain.

On the other hand, the copper and copper alloy business is characterized by its production of a wide variety of products in multiple processes, and calculating CFP for each product has presented challenges in managing vast amounts of data, standardizing calculation processes, and establishing a continuous operational system. In light of these changes in the external environment and the characteristics of the business, MMC has determined that it is essential to elevate CFP calculation from a case-by-case basis to a system that can be efficiently and continuously operated across the entire business and has built the "CFP Digital Platform."

This platform and third-party certification apply to the billets and cakes, strips, and plates manufactured at MMC's Osaka Plant (Sakai and Sambo Sites), as well as some of the strips manufactured at MMC's Wakamatsu Plant. In addition, MMC's CFP calculation system has been certified by the "SuMPO Carbon Footprint Comprehensive Calculation Scheme" provided by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO). Under this scheme, SuMPO, acting as a third party, certifies the validity of the CFP calculation and verification system established and operated by a company, based on international standards (*3).

Through this initiative, MMC has established a system that allows for efficient and continuous calculation of CFP while ensuring high reliability in its copper and copper alloy products business, which handles a wide variety of products. Furthermore, MMC plans to expand the scope of this platform and third-party certification during Fiscal Year ending March 31, 2027.

MMC will continue to calculate the CFP of its main products and promote efforts to address climate change.
Mitsubishi Materials Group has defined "For people, society and the earth, circulating resources for a sustainable future" as "Our Commitment" and will continue to carry out various initiatives aimed at realizing a decarbonized society.
