Mitsubishi Materials Group Biodiversity Conservation Policy Established

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation("MMC") has established a fundamental policy to materialize efforts to conserve biodiversity.
MMC Group has set out "Our Commitment" of "For people, society and the earth, circulating resources for a sustainable future," based on its Corporate Philosophy of "For People, Society and the Earth."
Furthermore, our Code of Conduct stipulates "Environment Management," and our Materiality includes "Biodiversity retention" as a key theme.
MMC Group's biodiversity initiatives are positioned as "Respect Biodiversity" in MMC's environmental policy.
In light of recent changes in the social environment regarding biodiversity issues, we have formulated a new "Biodiversity Conservation Policy" as a more detailed version of our Environmental Policy, with the aim of making our initiatives more concrete.

The following six areas have been defined as focus areas.
Focused Area:

  1. Assessment of the impact of business activities and raw material procurement on biodiversity
  2. Demonstration of the biodiversity conservation functions through maintenance of company-owned forests and management of closed mines
  3. Provision of opportunities to interact with nature
  4. Effective use of resources and reduction of the impact on the ecosystem through metal resource recycling
  5. Ecosystem conservation through climate change measures
  6. Compliance with environment-related laws and regulations in operations, etc.

In 2023, one of our company-owned forests, Teine Forest, was certified as a Nationally Certified Sustainably Managed Natural Sites promoted by the Ministry of the Environment, and in August 2024 it was registered in the international database as OECM(*1).
MMC will continue to promote such activities and other efforts toward biodiversity conservation.

(*1)
OECM: Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures; areas that contribute to biodiversity conservation other than officially protected areas, such as corporate forests.
