Mitsubishi Materials Corporation
Mitsubishi Materials Corporation ("MMC") and Anglo American plc ("Anglo American"), a UK-listed multinational mining company headquartered in London, UK, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote collaboration for providing sustainable and responsible products throughout the copper-related products supply chain.
In order to achieve carbon neutrality, a shift to EVs and an expanded use of electricity derived from renewable sources are being promoted, and demand for copper is expected to increase accordingly. As global demand for copper increases, it is desired that those supplies be greener and more sustainable. In light of this situation, MMC and Anglo American have agreed to collaborate to advance efforts to ensure transparency and to provide sustainable and responsible products throughout the copper-related products supply chain. Both companies have built a good relationship through many years of trading in copper concentrate. Under this MOU, we will share information on various decarbonization technologies and strive to calculate and reduce the carbon footprint (CFP) of our copper-related products.
Nobuhiro Takayanagi, Managing Executive Officer Responsible for Sustainable Development at MMC, said, "Our company has set out 'Our Commitment' of 'For people, society and the earth, circulating resources for a sustainable future.' We will build a connected system of metal resources based on our strengths and realize growth throughout the value chain by expanding the scope, regions, and scale of our operations. Through cooperation with Anglo American, we will promote efforts to ensure transparency of product information."
Paul Ward, Executive Head of Base Metals Marketing at Anglo American, said: "We are forging long-term collaborations with customers across key geographies, building on well-established commercial relationships to extend the impact of our commitment to create ethical value chains for our products beyond our own mining operations.
Consumers around the world are increasingly asking that their purchases come with greater assurance of sustainable production. Our work with Mitsubishi Materials aims to accelerate efforts to increase provenance visibility for materials used in some of the key technologies for modern life and to improve living standards for a growing global population through sustainable socio-economic development."
