Mitsubishi Materials Corporation

Participation in NEDO's Green Innovation Fund Project/
Development of Technology for Producing Concrete Using CO2
- Embarking on the Development of Technology for Recovery of Cement from Waste Concrete and Carbonation -

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation is pleased to announce its participation in the Green Innovation Fund Project/Development of Technology for Producing Concrete Using CO2 by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to work on the development of technology for the item "Establishment of carbonation technology using various calcium sources" in the field of cement (the Project).

The Project is intended to realize carbon neutrality in the cement industry by extracting calcium oxide (CaO) from waste matter containing calcium (Ca), such as waste concrete and incinerated ash, to react with carbon dioxide (CO2) recovered from the cement production process to generate a carbonate (CaCO3) and using this as a raw material to produce carbon recycled cement. Under the plan, the technology development will be advanced as industry-academia collaboration with Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co., Ltd. as the representative company, Taisei Corporation, and us, totaling three companies, and four universities including Yamaguchi University, Kyushu University, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and the University of Tokyo, with a view to the establishment of the technology and social implementation by 2030.

In this Project, by FY2026 we will conduct verification tests of efficient recovery of cement fine powder (CaO) from waste concrete and direct carbonation of cement fine powder (generation of CaCO3) using exhaust gas (CO2) from a cement plant. This technology development is planned to be undertaken jointly with Sumitomo Osaka Cement Co., Ltd., Taisei Corporation, and the University of Tokyo.
(To be taken over by Mitsubishi UBE Cement Corporation from April 1, 2022)

The vision of the Mitsubishi Materials Group is to "become the leading business group committed to creating a sustainable world through materials innovation, with use of our unique and distinctive technologies" based on its corporate philosophy of "For People, Society and the Earth." We will continue to contribute to the building of a recycling-oriented society through the development of technology that helps reduce environmental impact.
