Participation in "OMIC R&D" at Cooperative Research Institute for Government, Industry and Academia in the United States

The Advanced Materials & Tools Business Company of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation (President: Akira Takeuchi; capital: 119.4 billion yen; "Advanced Materials & Tools Business Company") is pleased to announce its participation in OMIC R&D (Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center Research and Development), a cooperative research institute for government, industry and academia that conducts cutting-edge research and development, and education regarding metal processing in Oregon, U.S. We will strive to increase its presence as a global player in cemented carbide products by contributing to economic development in the region through information exchange in the metal processed product manufacturing industry, including cutting tools to be provided and its conditions for research at OMIC R&D.

Based on the U.K. model of AMRC (The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre), which partners with the Boeing Company, OMIC R&D was established in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon, in June 2017, led by seven companies in the private sector and three universities (Oregon Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, and Portland State University).

The Boeing Company seeks innovative tools, skills and technologies that will improve productivity and reduce costs to secure long-term competitiveness. OMIC R&D is the 15th cooperative research institute for government, industry and academia established around the world, and led by Boeing. The institution brings together applied research through cooperation among manufacturers, advanced educational institutions and government agencies, and collaborates to strengthen competitiveness in the metal processed product manufacturing industry in Oregon. OMIC R&D cultivates next-generation engineers and researchers who support the metal processed product manufacturing industry in the region through improved training programs for technology and skills in the industry.

Our Advanced Materials & Tools Business Company aims to become a "global player who can provide high value-added products, service, and solutions" as the medium- to long-term target of its Medium-term Management Strategy. It will strive for further growth as a global player, driven by the activities at OMIC R&D that support continuous economic development in Oregon, U.S.
