Metals & Resource Circulation

Features

Highest in the world of processing capacity

Discarded circuit boards from various electronic devices are commonly referred to as E-Scrap and contain high concentrations of valuable metals such as gold, silver, copper, platinum, and palladium. Recently, they have garnered increased attention as a new and precious source of raw materials for smelting.

The generation of E-Scrap is on the rise due to the increasing recycling rates of home appliances and electronic devices worldwide, driven by growing environmental awareness.

We have been advancing our response to the expanding E-Scrap market, centered around the Naoshima Smelter & Refinery, which boasts the Mitsubishi Process, a unique and environmentally friendly smelting process for valuable metals.

In 2023, Onahama Smelting and Refining Co., Ltd. became a wholly owned subsidiary, and we are collaborating to develop systems for receiving and processing E-Scrap, aiming to increase the processing volume as one MMC Group.

We opened MM Metal Recycling B.V. in the Netherlands in 2018 as our first overseas E-Scrap receiving and sampling site. Furthermore, we established Mitsubishi Material Europe B.V. in the Netherlands in 2024, which serves as our regional headquarters for the recycling business in Europe, enhancing our response to international markets, particularly in Europe, which leads the world in environmental policies.

We have set a target of increasing our E-Scrap processing capacity to 240,000 tons per year by 2030 and will continue to expand our capabilities at both domestic and overseas sites, contributing to a recycling-oriented society with our world-class processing capacity.
