Completion of MM Metal Recycling B.V. Sampling Center
- Expanding the collection of E-Scrap from the European region -

Mitsubishi Materials Corporation (President: Akira Takeuchi; Capital: 119.4 billion yen) announced today that its Metals company established MM Metal Recycling B.V. (hereafter, the "New Company") in Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands jointly with Hanwa Co., Ltd. (President: Hironari Furukawa, Capital: 45.6 billion yen) in June 2016 to expand the collection of E-Scrap*1 from the European region, and also completed the construction of a sampling center (hereinafter, "the Center") for receiving, inspecting, and sampling E-Scrap and other operations by investing approximately 4.7 billion yen in total.

Taking advantage of the Mitsubishi Process for continuous copper smelting*2, a unique technology for extracting copper with the lowest environmental impact in the industry, we had been promoting the expansion of E-Scrap receiving and processing capacity for the last several years. In April 2016, the combined E-Scrap receiving and processing capacity of ourselves and Onahama Smelting and Refining Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation, reached approximately 140,000 tons per year, and was ranked top in the world. Following the completion of the Center, it was increased to approximately 160,000 tons per year. We will continue considering further increases in the E-Scrap receiving and processing capacity.

The completion of the Center not only expanded the E-Scrap receiving and processing capacity but also significantly shortened the period for the valuation of E-Scrap because operations from the receipt to the sampling of E-Scrap are currently being undertaken in the European region, which enables us to respond to customer needs to provide prompt valuation results.

In addition, the E-scrap carry-in reservation web system that we originally developed as part of our customer services was introduced for the first time at the Naoshima Smelter and Refinery in June 2014, and its operation was then expanded to Onahama Smelting and Refining Co., Ltd. in April 2017. This time, the system functions have been enhanced to make it available at the Center as well.

Through these measures, we will improve convenience for customers in the European region, which is one of the largest sources of E-Scrap, and enhance our E-Scrap collection system.

Under Mitsubishi Materials Group's corporate philosophy of "For People, Society and the Earth," we aim to become "the leading business group committed to creating a sustainable world through materials innovation, with the use of our unique and distinctive technologies, for People, Society and the Earth." The Metals company will continue to contribute to the development of a sustainable society through the recycling of valuable metals to achieve this vision.

*1.
E-Scrap
Scrap containing valuable metals, typical examples of which are circuit boards among used appliances and electronic equipment
*2.
Mitsubishi Process for continuous copper smelting
In this process, smelting furnaces, slag cleaning furnaces, converting furnaces, and anode furnaces are connected by enclosed launders, continuously producing blister copper from concentrates. This results in a facility that is compact, conserves energy and operates at low cost. The Mitsubishi Process prevents sulfurous acid gas leaks, creating zero-emission processing plants with non-polluting systems that process efficiently, in contrast to conventional processes in which movement between the furnaces results in the unavoidable leak of sulfurous acid gas.
